Calumet
21st Century Funk & Soul
Calumet was formed in 2001 by Eric Mobley and Jason Mitchell. Their first album, “Retro Energy”, was released in 2002, and since then many more songs and albums have been added to their catalog of original funk music. The band has been influenced by Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix, P-Funk, Herbie Hancock, the Isley Brothers, Kool & the Gang, James Brown, and many more great artists.
Calumet's music features rich soul harmonies, thick bass grooves, ripping guitar, and strong hooks, resulting in an appealing mix that grabs you the first time you hear it. Drawing from life in the modern world, the band's lyrics allude to the breakdown we witness in society caused by intolerance and racism.
In addition to their original music, Calumet is also known for choice cover songs, including their remake of Black Ice's classic, “I Judge the Funk”, which was featured in a documentary about that LA soul group. A remake of “Skin Tight”, by the Ohio Players, shows their creativity and sense of humor. Their live set usually features a Hendrix tune to finish the show.
Having settled in to a strong period of writing and recording since re-forming in 2018, Calumet continues to push their music forward with new perspective in every release.
